The HCA Nurse Residency Program will provide education, support and guidance to new graduate nurses as they begin their careers in HCA Healthcare hospitals. It is a yearlong, extensive clinical orientation (StaRN) and professional development curriculum for new graduate nurses that culminates in an evidence-based capstone project.

StaRN Emergency Services (16-Weeks) – Cohort Start Date April 5, 2021

Specialty Training Apprenticeship for Registered Nurses (StaRN)

The StaRN Program is primarily designed to provide the graduate nurse with the tools necessary to succeed in today’s hospital environment. StaRN will assist the graduate nurse with the transition out of the classroom setting onto the unit by providing the following training:
  • Didactic training: introduces nurses to core curriculum and hospital initiatives in a classroom setting
  • Simulation training: reinforces nursing skills learned in a didactic setting
  • Hands on training: preceptorship training with a facility preceptor in the nursing unit
Program Overview:

  • The program runs for approximately 16 weeks.
  • The first eight (8) weeks includes a combination of didactic education and skills, eLearning, facility days and simulation. The typical schedule during the first portion of the StaRN is Monday through Friday, 8-hours a day, 40 hours a week but can also include a weekend day during the holidays.
  • The remaining eight (8) weeks is spent at the sponsoring facility working with a clinical preceptor from the hiring facility. The preceptorship portion of the program consists of three 12-hour shifts per week and every other weekend at the hospital, following the preceptors schedule.
  • For residents assigned to the Emergency Department track, the program is based on the ENA: Emergency Nursing Orientation 2.0 Core Curriculum. Many of the division and/or facility specific training initiatives will be incorporated as well.
  • Depending on the HCA Division, StaRN Residents will earn the following certifications based on the HCA Division Job Description Requirements: AHA, BLS, ACLS, PALS, ENPC, TNCC, NIH Stroke Scale, and CPI Certifications. Residents will also be introduced and trained on facility Electronic Health Record.
