The Life of an HCA Nurse

The Breast Center Nurse Navigator has responsibilities which include assessing, planning and directing appropriate care in Mammography and creating an environment that promotes, stimulates and fosters personnel growth and satisfaction. They are compassionate, have vast clinical knowledge, and are able to stay calm under pressure.


About this unit:

  • Work schedule - Monday - Friday, No weekends. 

Responsibilities

The Registered Nurse Breast Care Patient Coordinator serves as a hospital ambassador from a patient’s first contact to completion of treatment for coordination of breast care and education of Imaging / Oncology, etc. services through and between treatment modalities under the direction of the Radiology Director and collaborates with the Chief Nursing Officer in maintaining nursing competencies. The Registered Nurse Breast Care Patient Coordinator provides therapeutic and administrative services necessary for breast care and follow-up breast care for the patient and family, and in support of the mission of Overland Park Regional Medical Center. The Registered Nurse Breast Care Patient Coordinator collaborates with the radiologist and primary care physician in provision of comprehensive and multidisciplinary breast care for the patient and family. The Registered Nurse Breast Care Patient Coordinator manages services throughout the continuum of breast care, decreasing fragmentation of breast care while promoting patient’s physical, mental, and spiritual health. The Registered Nurse Breast Care Patient Coordinator has current broad knowledge of the assessment, treatment and care techniques and principles relevant to growth and development of neonate/infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.

Under the general direction of the Radiologists and under the supervision of the Radiology Director employee will:

  1. Serve as patient navigator for Breast Center patients for Mammography and Ultrasound biopsies and follow up care.
  2. Responsible for the written communication regarding exam results to patient – lay letters to all patients.
  3. Responsible for verbal communication with patients and physicians for Mammography follow up appointments.
  4. Monitor patient return for follow up to meet established guidelines.
  5. Responsible for preparing work schedules for Mammography staff
  6. Serve on the peer interview team for all applicants for Mammography Technologist positions.
  7. Provide employee performance feedback at 30 days, 90 days, and annually.
  8. Provide training for new technologists.
  9. Maintain ACR accreditation.
  10. Maintain MQSA and FDA certification.
  11.  Serve as a representative on the Breast Program Leadership Committee.

Qualifications

What Qualifications You Will Need: 
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing required.
  • Current state nursing license required; BLS certification required.  
  • One year of experience in Oncology or Imaging Services preferred.  Prior experience in a similar size facility with similar services provided is preferred.  Patient navigation and/or nursing education in Oncology or Imaging Services preferred.
