Unit Description
South Austin Hospital Surgery department is equipped with 9 operating suites, and 1 Cystoscopy suite. We perform procedures such as neuro, orthopedic and cardiac. Our surgical volume ranges between 5,000 and 6,000 procedures yearly, including over 250 open-heart surgeries annually. To accommodate our growing cardiac volumes, we added 2 state-of-the-art cardiac OR suites, conveniently located near our Cardiovascular Recover unit.
 
Flexible scheduling provides an opportunity for the staff to advance their education. With approximately 50% of current OR staff attending school, the unit offers the ability to move throughout the department and explore other job titles. Due to the importance of orienting and educating the OR department, we have a full time educator on board to help meet the needs of our new and current staff.
 
Position Description
Responsible for professional nursing care and related assistance to patients with a broad range of illnesses.The RN is involved in direct and indirect patient care. The RN provides direction to licensed vocational nurses (LVNs) and other non-licensed nursing personnel in providing direct patient care. The staff nurse supports the medical care of patients under the direction of the Medical Staff pursuant to the objectives of the hospital. In collaboration with other health team members, follows the philosophy, policies and goals of the facility and department. 

 
Job Duties:
 

1)  Directs and delivers comprehensive nursing care to post-anesthesia, post-operative patients in a safe and proficient manner.

 

2)  Assumes charge nurse responsibilities when necessary.

 

3)  Performs venipunctures and administers and maintains IV fluids and IV medications in accordance with hospital practice guidelines.  Correctly labels, calculates and regulates flow of IV solution.  Documents IV details accurately.

 

4)  Provides proper oxygen supplement to patient either as ordered by physician or as indicated by saturated oxygen level of less than 90%.
